About Us
Sonoma Valley Hospital (SVH) is a district hospital that provides general and acute care services to the residents of the Sonoma Valley Health Care District. SVH is a 24-bed hospital that offers a wide range of services, including emergency care, surgery, intensive care, medical imaging, laboratory, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, wellness, and community education.
The hospital has received several awards and recognitions for its quality and safety. The hospital’s mission is to maintain, improve, and restore the health of everyone in the Sonoma Valley.
The hospital was founded in 1946 by a group of local physicians and community leaders who recognized the need for a local hospital to serve the growing population of the valley. The hospital opened its doors on July 1, 1947, with 28 beds, four physicians, and 12 nurses. Over the years, SVH has expanded its facilities and services to meet the changing needs of the community. The hospital has undergone several renovation and modernization projects, the most recent one being the Future of Care Campaign, which was completed in 2014.
In March 2018, SVH signed an affiliation agreement with UCSF Health, one of the top-ranked academic medical centers in the nation. The agreement aims to create an integrated health care network that will serve the needs of Sonoma Valley residents by enhancing the quality, access, and coordination of care .

Foundation
The Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation (SVHF) is the philanthropic arm of the Sonoma Valley Hospital and a place where donors can connect their interests with the needs of the hospital and community. The SVHF was established in 1982 by a group of visionary community leaders who wanted to ensure the long-term viability and excellence of the hospital. Since then, the SVHF has raised millions of dollars to support the hospital’s facilities, equipment, programs, and services.
The SVHF organizes various fundraising events and campaigns throughout the year, such as the Women’s Symposium, the Sonoma Valley Hospital Golf Tournament, the Future of Care Campaign, and the Project Pink Breast Health Program. The SVHF also manages several endowment funds and legacy gifts that provide a steady source of income for the hospital. The SVHF works closely with the hospital’s board, leadership, staff, and volunteers to identify the most pressing needs and priorities of the hospital and the community. The SVHF’s mission is to inspire the community to invest in exceptional health care for the Sonoma Valley.
The volunteers on the Board of Directors and the Advisory Council are the heartbeat of the Foundation. We are grateful for their time, expertise, and financial support.

Health Care District
The Sonoma Valley Health Care District is a public agency that owns and operates the Sonoma Valley Hospital, a full-service acute care hospital that serves the residents of the Sonoma Valley. The district was formed in 1946 by a vote of the local citizens who wanted to have a local hospital to provide quality health care to the community. The district is governed by a five-member board of directors who are elected by the voters of the district and serve four-year terms. The board is responsible for setting the policies and direction of the hospital, overseeing its finances and operations, and ensuring its compliance with the state and federal regulations. The board also appoints the hospital’s chief executive officer, who manages the day-to-day operations of the hospital and its staff. The district’s mission is to maintain, improve, and restore the health of everyone in the Sonoma Valley.
Judith Bjorndal, Board Chair
Judith Bjorndal, Board Chair, is a retired physician who moved to Sonoma to begin a private pediatric practice in 1979. In addition to her practice Dr. Bjorndal was an addiction medicine specialist and has served as medical director at drug and alcohol facilities. She was Medical Director at the Sonoma Developmental Center for ten years, until her retirement in 2010.
Susan Kornblatt Idell, First Vice Chair
Susan Kornblatt Idell, First Vice Chair, is a social gerontologist who designs and develops curricula for health professionals in the field of aging. Her work at both UCSF and On Lok in San Francisco focused on the training of practicing health professionals and trainees to provide care for the aging population. She has an emphasis on the development and functioning of geriatric interdisciplinary teams who provide care for the frail elderly, and during her career has published numerous articles and book chapters on the subject. Ms. Kornblatt Idell and her husband, Richard, moved to Sonoma in 2010.

Acute Stroke Ready Certification
Sonoma Valley Hospital is Acute Stroke Ready certified by the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ). Certification is given to hospitals that meet high standards of care for the initial treatment of stroke patients when quick action and proper medication can save lives and limit the long-term disabling effects of a stroke.
